What is the full form of MHADA?

The full form of MHADA is Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority, and it is called महाराष्ट्र गृहनिर्माण व क्षेत्र विकास प्राधिकरण in Marathi. It originated from the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Act, 1976, and came into existence on 5 December 1977. Under Government Resolution No. 2679/B former Mumbai Housing and Area Development Board was reorganized and divided into three separate boards i.e. Mumbai Housing and Area Development Board, Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board, and Mumbai Slum Improvement Board. MHADA functions under the Ministry of Housing, Maharashtra. At present, MHADA is active in 9 different housing regions of Maharashtra by slitting into Mumbai, Konkan, Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Amravati, Mumbai Building Repairs & Reconstruction Board (MBRR), and Mumbai Slum Improvement Board (MSI).

History

Maharashtra Housing Board was established in 1948 which was functioning throughout Maharashtra except for the Vidarbha area (districts in Vidarbha - Amravati, Yavatmal, Buldana, Akola, Washim, Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, and Gondia). Housing Board for Vidarbha was established in 1960, its function was the same as Maharashtra Housing Board additionally it was also giving the loan to co-operative housing society, institutes, and local authorities for housing purposes. The Bombay Building Repair and Reconstruction Board was set up in 1971 to deal with the problems of tenants living in the island parts of Bombay. Maharashtra Slum Improvement Board was formed in 1974 to provide facilities like water taps, walkways, drainage, toilets, and street lights, etc. in the slum area. Initially, it was limited only to Mumbai city and Mumbai suburb districts but later it was extended to other parts of the state as well. Similarly, MHADA was established by Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Act, 1976. It has constructed more than 3 lakhs housing units in Mumbai.
